David was born in in the Mara region of Tanganyika where his parents, Clyde and Alta Shenk, were among the earliest Mennonite missionaries to Africa.

Arriving in colonial Tanganyika in , the Shenks planted a church in the village of Bumangi, east of Lake Victoria. Relatively untouched by the modern world, the dominant ethnic group in the area, the Zanaki, had no written language and no access to modern medicine."
